The Icarus Kid self-titled debut album

Looks like back in 2010, when the amazing Kid Icarus Uprising was barely announced to bring back our legendary NES era hero, The Icarus Kid (AKA Dan Crowdus) was hard at work with this upbeat look back at some of the tracks of that wonderful regular Nintendo past. Purchase and sample this release over through The Kid Icarus website and reminisce about traversing dungeons and climbing towers in pixelated 2D.

Enjoy a small sampling of the full thirteen tracks below.

DeusPony – Video Games to Piano album

Armed with only a piano, DeusPony delivers video games, in the form of that piano. The piano makes music. The music is performed by DeusPony. It all works out very well. Especially for those who listen to the classy instrumentals in the DeusPony release Video Games to Piano. Including a bouncy piano arrangement of Choco Mountain from Mario Kart 64. Oh Mario Kart, it is so fun. Then there’s that fifteen minute Mario medley. Very good album. Very good.

The J. Arthur Keenes Band – Computer Savvy EP release

J. Arthur Keenes has such a way with words.  The music is pretty damn good too. A song from TJAKB’s debut EP was my ringtone for several years based on those facts. If not for the current Earthbound theme of my new phone, a strong case can be made for the track Water2 (wetter) being a pretty catchy ringtone today. So be a savvy music lover and go get Computer Savvy.

roms and emulators

Or should I say emulators and roms (and isos)?

What is the criteria for writing about these in video game articles. Is there some rule I don’t know about? I mention this because I have to hit up gbatemp to find some gamers that keep it real, and even in such forums and internet back alleys there is a special gamers etiquette that doesn’t allow one to bring up more than hacks and homebrew.

So here is the question. Do I keep it real, revealing the realities of this underground community and how it affected me? This would likely be frowned upon by mainstream gaming media, not to mention the VG companies that are trying to make a profit.

Or, on the other hand, sticking with the status quo will likely lend much better to getting my foot in the door of the video game writing business proper. Then again, is that even what I want?

Lots more thoughts of course but I would like to pose this question before moving forward.

Complaining about: Uncharted

So there I am on an island no one knew about for centuries, in a place no man has set foot on in hundreds of years. I’m fighting a cunning group of thieves out to kill me and steal the treasure I came here to retrieve for probably more noble purposes I guess.

I am crafty enough to steal a Jet S- WaveRun- AHEM ‘personal water craft’ from the villains, and I set a course upriver. Unfortunately, the enemy knows I’m on the way. Suddenly they begin to toss dozens of barrels into the river. Oh no! They are full of oil, and explode violently!

This is the part where I pause the game and take a deep breath.

Hold on a minute now Uncharted.

Oil prices are in the range of a hundred bucks a barrel, and these henchmen are just tossing it into the river like it’s worthless. These guys wouldn’t need to steal such rare things if they were just more careful with how they use their money and supplies.

Did they really bring hundreds of drums of oil to just throw into a river when they got here? And if not, then what were they intended for? Because you sure as hell can’t use them for that when you are throwing them in the fucking ocean!

But before we can even worry about that, we have to ask the underlying question, how exactly did you get all that oil here? You can’t just pick up some oil drums from the local supply store, and fill them up at the uncharted gas station. These barrels had to be carried onto a boat, likely by the same henchmen that are chucking them out like expired food as we speak. If you factor in the cost, as well as the fact that a giant cargo ship docking anywhere and buying hundreds of barrels of oil and weapons, landing in any port anywhere not exactly being inconspicuous, I can only conclude that at the very least, these thieves need to hire an accountant.

Oh Uncharted, you had me going there for a moment, but you burst the reality of my experience like an exploding barrel blows up a personal watercraft.

If it was released today: Tetris

Tetris

First the demo.

Harold : “Check it out! The Tetris demo came out today!”

John: “Tetris demo? How do you make a demo of Tetris? The first ten seconds is the whole thing! Its not going to get Tetrisier. You don’t unlock the eighth piece after the first boss battle!”

Harold: “You’re right. What if they only let you use four types of pieces in the demo. In fact, I bet you only get the straight block if you pre-order the collector’s edition!”

John: “Well, I’m sure it will be downloadable content after a month or two, but are you really going to pay $5 for unlockable Tetris pieces?”

Harold: “Well, what shapes are they?”

Finally, the game is released.

Harold: “This version has 1080P, and 5.1 Surround Sound! Even Assassin’s Creed wasn’t in 1080p!”

John: “I can play Tetris on my calculator. How much straighter can those blocks get? And what is surround sound for?”

Harold: “It’s so you can hear the blocks sneaking up on you.”*

The game begins.

PS3: “Please wait, while we retrieve a software update for Tetris. Downloading File 1/3.”

Harold: “Son of a-”

John: “I think I have my Game Boy around here somewhere, so we can play some Tetris while we wait…”

*Note: I am dismayed that entering “Metal Gear Tetris” into Google resulted in no images of a tetris piece sneaking up and killing someone.

Sweet Valley – Eternal Champ album release

Admittedly I have little data about Sweet Valley or their new album, but from what I can ascertain, the eternal champ has proven himself, and his true resolve has been revealed. A fusion of hip hop beats and electronic ambiance, with clever sampling that will make you wonder if some sort of shadow person is playing video games in the darkness just outside your vision.
